Schema markup for small sites: JSON-LD that helps Google and AI answers
Which schema types small sites actually need, how to add JSON-LD safely, and how structured data helps rich results and AI citation—not magic rankings.
Short answer
Schema markup is structured data (usually JSON-LD in the page head) that describes your organization, product, FAQ, or article in a machine-readable way. It can unlock rich results and helps AI systems understand entities; it does not replace good content or indexing. Start with Organization or WebSite, add FAQ or Product only when the page matches, and validate before shipping.

What schema is
Schema.org vocabulary describes people, products, articles, FAQs, and organizations in a structured format. On the web you usually embed it as application/ld+json. Search engines and some AI tools use it to understand entities—not as a substitute for readable HTML.
What small sites should add
- Organization or WebSite on the home page (name, URL, logo).
- FAQPage only on pages that visibly answer those questions.
- Product or SoftwareApplication on real product pages with price and availability when you sell.
- Article or BlogPosting on long-form guides with a clear author and date.
Skip stuffing every type on every page. Irrelevant schema can be ignored or treated as spammy.
Common mistakes
- FAQ schema that does not match visible FAQ content.
- Broken JSON (trailing commas, unescaped quotes).
- Schema only injected by client JavaScript—many crawlers never see it.
- Ignoring AI search visibility while chasing rich results alone.

Questions
Does schema markup improve rankings?
It does not guarantee higher rankings. It can enable rich results and helps machines understand who you are. Content, crawlability, and links still matter more.
JSON-LD or Microdata?
Prefer JSON-LD in a script tag in the head or body. Google documents JSON-LD as the easiest format for most sites.
How much schema do I need?
Start with Organization or WebSite on the home page. Add FAQPage, Product, Article, or LocalBusiness only when the page content matches that type.
Does schema help AI search?
Clear entities and FAQ-style answers make it easier for AI systems to cite you. Schema is one signal alongside crawlable HTML and trustworthy mentions.
