How to get your website cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews

A practical playbook for AI search visibility (GEO): let the right crawlers in, serve content in HTML, write answer-first pages, add structured data, and earn mentions AI engines trust.

Short answer

AI search engines can only cite pages they can crawl, read, and trust. Allow the AI search crawlers in robots.txt, make sure your content is in the server-rendered HTML, get indexed by Google and Bing, put a direct answer near the top of each page, add structured data, and earn mentions on sites AI engines already cite, such as reviews, directories, Reddit, and roundups.

Start with the free AI crawler checker to see which AI bots your robots.txt allows, then work through the steps below.

How AI engines pick sources

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, or Google a question that needs fresh information, the assistant runs searches, fetches a handful of pages, and writes an answer that links to some of them. To be one of those links, your page has to pass three filters:

  1. Reachable: the engine's crawler is allowed in and gets real content back.
  2. Retrievable: the page is in the index the engine searches and matches the question.
  3. Quotable: the page states a clear, specific answer the model can lift and attribute, from a source that looks trustworthy.

The steps below map to those three filters.

1. Let the right crawlers in

AI companies run separate bots for search and for training. Allow the search ones, even if you block training. The ones that matter most for citations:

CrawlerFeeds
OAI-SearchBotChatGPT search
PerplexityBotPerplexity answers
Claude-SearchBotClaude search
GooglebotGoogle Search, AI Overviews, and AI Mode
BingbotBing and Microsoft Copilot

Also check your CDN or firewall. Bot protection can block these crawlers before they read robots.txt. The full list, with copy-paste rules, is in robots.txt for AI crawlers.

2. Serve content in HTML

Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your page is an empty <div id="root"> until React loads, they see nothing to cite. View the page source (not the DevTools Elements panel) and confirm your headings, body text, prices, and FAQs are there. If not, use server rendering or static generation for marketing and content pages.

3. Get indexed in Google and Bing

  • Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
  • Check that important pages are not noindex and have a correct canonical URL.
  • Use IndexNow (supported by Bing and others) to tell search engines when pages change, so new content is picked up in hours instead of weeks.

4. Write answer-first pages

Assistants quote sentences that stand on their own. For each page that targets a question:

  • Put a two or three sentence direct answer right under the title.
  • Use question-style headings that match how people ask ("How much does X cost?").
  • State facts with numbers and dates: prices, limits, thresholds, "updated on" dates.
  • Use tables for comparisons and numbered steps for processes.
  • Say plainly who you are, what you do, who it is for, and how you compare. Pages like comparisons and pricing are among the most cited.

5. Add structured data

JSON-LD gives engines unambiguous facts: your organization name and logo, your product and its price, article authors and dates, and FAQ answers. Use Organization and WebSite site-wide, Product or SoftwareApplication for what you sell, Article for guides, and FAQPage where you have visible questions and answers. Build it with the schema generator.

Optionally, publish an llms.txt file with a summary and links to your key pages.

6. Earn mentions

AI answers lean heavily on third-party sources: review sites, directories, Reddit threads, YouTube, and "best tools" roundups. If you are absent from those, you are absent from most answers about your category.

  • List your product in the directories for your niche, with a consistent name and description.
  • Answer real questions in communities where your customers ask them, and disclose that you built the product.
  • Reach out to the authors of roundups that already rank for your category.
  • Keep your name, description, and links identical everywhere so engines connect them to one entity.

7. Measure it

  • Track referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai, and gemini.google.com.
  • Each month, ask the main assistants your ten most important questions and note who they cite.
  • Watch your server logs for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot visits.

Questions

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO is the work of making your site easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews to find, understand, and cite. It builds on SEO: the same crawlability and quality basics, plus answer-first writing, structured data, and mentions on sites AI engines already trust.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO aims to rank pages in classic search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to have your text used as the direct answer, for example in featured snippets or voice answers. GEO aims to be cited inside AI-generated answers. In practice they overlap heavily, and a technically sound, clearly written site serves all three.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing results?

ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) together with third-party search providers. Microsoft Copilot is built on Bing. Being indexed in both Google and Bing, and allowing OAI-SearchBot, covers the main routes into AI answers.

How do I know if AI search sends me traffic?

In your analytics, look at referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai, and gemini.google.com. Some AI traffic arrives without a referrer, so also watch for growth in direct visits to deep pages. You can also ask the assistants your target questions and see whether you are cited.

Do I need llms.txt to be cited?

No. AI search engines cite pages they crawl and index, and none of the major ones has said llms.txt affects ranking. It is a cheap extra that helps agents and developer tools, not a requirement.
